Coleman's Italian Frustration

Seamus Coleman ~ acknowledged that Italy weren’t at their strongest on Saturday night against the Republic of Ireland but he was still disappointed that his team didn’t win the game.

The international friendly at Fulham’s Craven Cottage finished goalless but the Blues right-back thought Ireland did just enough to merit a victory.

“It was a very tough game against a very good Italy side,” he said. “They made us work very hard defensively but when we broke, we broke well and created some very good chances

“They are a top team and they had a couple of players on the bench who didn’t play and it will be a tough game for England [in the World Cup] but tonight we are just disappointed that we didn’t win the game.

“That shows how well we did tonight and although they obviously had a lot of the ball we stayed compact and I know the forward players will be disappointed that we didn’t score.”

Speaking exclusively to evertontv in the Craven Cottage media zone after the match, Coleman was keen to offer praise to his Goodison teammate
Aiden McGeady who also completed the entire 90 minutes for Ireland.

“He pulled a few tricks out of the bag and that’s what he is capable of and the Everton fans will see that next season when he gets a good pre-season under his belt,” he said. “He’s a tricky player who I wouldn’t like to play against every week. I think it’ll be a good season for Aiden.”

Coleman played 41 times for Everton in all competitions last season - his 40 starts was more than any other player at the Club.

And after a long campaign he is now ready to put his feet up and relax – starting with a return to his hometown in Killybegs, County Donegal.

He added: “Yes, I’m heading back home for a couple of days then I’m sure I’ll get away for a holiday with my girlfriend and I’m looking forward to chilling out to be honest!”
